2023 - Jarl Steven Brown
The 2023 Festival took place on 24th February
The festival returned with a blaze of glory after a 2 year hiatus. Jarl Logi Fornjotson (Steven Brown) led the festival on its return after the pandemic. The delight was clear to see on the faces of the guizers, none more so than Steven himself.
Due to the low tide; the galley burning, for the third festival in a row, took place in the ebb rather than being afloat. It made for a spectacular sight with the steam rising from the wet ground and the fire reflecting in the water.
The weekend continued in the usual fashion, with a late night in the hall, followed by the clearup and mass exodus to Burravoe on the Saturday. Once again the Burravoe Hall suppers were highly regarded by all. The weekend continued again on the Sunday with fish suppers back in Cullivoe, followed by the Jarl squad having their hair cut in some very interesting styles. A huge amount of money was raised over the weekend for the Jarl's chosen charities. Yell community nurses were awarded with a £400 mobility scooter, while Alzheimers Scotland (Shetland) and MacMillan nurses (Shetland) were each given £1450. A huge thank you to all who donated.
Another hugely successful festival, and we look forward to 2024.
