2012 - Jarl Graham Hughson

The 2012 Festival took place on 24th February

The Jarl in 2012 was Graham Hughson from Mid Yell. Making his third appearance in a Jarl Squad, this year saw Graham take the helm; a fitting reward for years of participation in Up Helly Aa. Graham chose to portray Hallkjell Jonsson for the festival. Read more about the saga of Hallkjell Jonsson in the programme.

It was a very windy day for Up Helly Aa. The Jarl Squad had to battle their way to the Galley and to the school through strong westerly winds. The procession took place despite the weather and it was very successful, with the torches easily lasting to the waterfront and the galley burning brightly on the sea. All 13 squads performed to a warm reception in the hall and school, and the Cullivoe Dance Band played until well after 3am.

As seems to always be the case, Saturday was a lovely day with helpers sitting outside in the sun after the clear up, before leaving for Burravoe. Another fantastic show of hospitality was observed in Burravoe, before everyone headed back for the concert. Extra seating had to be laid out in the hall as a variety of acts entertained the crowd. Another great night dancing to Cullivoe Band followed.

The clear up night on the Sunday is always good fun, and the headshaving took place raising a phenomenal amount of money for charity.
